Alterations to a semi-detached dwelling on Sydney’s lower north shore.
This project has received development approval and we hope to commence on site in 2020.
One of a pretty pair of semi-detached houses in a conservation area on Sydney’s lower north shore, the design carefully increases the living space in a small cottage in a discreet yet elegant manner.
A new addition mirrors existing roof pitches and references the humble skillion extension it replaces. Materials and forms speak to the character of the conservation area, providing a contemporary reinterpretation of an old building. Timber screens manage privacy between neighbours on a narrow lot.
From the outset, a key part of the design was to connect the living spaces of the house to the garden - increasing the sense of space on a small site, and allowing easy supervision of the family’s small children. The design has moved on a bit from this image but the thinking has remained the same.
